Feeling Better

Naruto and Sendo arrived at the Ichiraku Ramen shop. Sendo looked around. "What's the difference between this shop and all the others?" she asked.

Naruto whizzed by her and hopped on the stool, slamming his fists on the counter. "This one's WAAAY better! Can you believe anyone who would pass up a bowl with that.. that..." He sniffed all around himself in ecstasy. "-That aroma in the air?"

Sendo shrugged and sat down next to him. "What ever you say," she said, smiling kindly. "You seem to be the expert."

"BELIEVE IT!" He gave her a thumbs up and then exitedly jolted back to the counter. "Alright, I want two spicy shrimp ramen bowls with a side of tempura, but no brocoli, ok?!" His eager eyes darted between Sendo and the ramen man. "What do you want, Death Harem? Don't be afraid to order ten bowls if you really want!"

Sendo blushed slightly. "Uh, just a bowl of beef ramen thanks," she replied. She looked around the shop. She hadn't seen a restaurant like this before...it was so open to the street. All the ones she had been to were closed up and not very inviting.

"Ooh!" Naruto sat up straiter. "Beef is really good too! Although I think I've favoured spicy beef over the regular kind." He pulled out a little pen and notepad and scribbled his ramen comparisons down. He just finished as the ramen guy placed his meal in front of him. Grabbing his chopsticks with unparallelled speed, Naruto slurped down his ramen not waiting a moment for it to cool. He was so hungry he didn't finish swallowing before grabbing sweet potato tempura and stuffing it in his mouth along with the ramen.

Sendo thanked the man as he passed her her own Ramen bowl. She looked over at Naruto and couldn't help but laugh. "You must be hungry," she said, grabbing a set of chopsticks. She swirled her ramen around, waiting for it to cool.

"Wellsh, yeah. Ish too goof not to clearf yoursh belly." He said as he sucked up the noodles. When that chunk was swallowed his eyes slid to her. "You are paying for this... Right?"

Sendo nodded. "Of course. After all you've done for me, it's the least I can do." She started to slowly eat her noodles, because they were still a little hot.

"Alright!" Naruto leaned back on his chair and stuck his arms out, almost like he was jumping on his seat. Then he leaned forward and slammed his hand on the counter. "Then I'll have another bowl, kimchi this time, okay?" He dunked shrimp tempura into the tempura sauce and grinned back at Sendo. "Where do you get money if you're always traveling, Death Harem?"

"Missons and stuff," Sendo replied simply, swirling a piece of beef around in the ramen broth. "My parents will sometimes send me a little extra for my birthday and such, but mostly I get my money from missons."

The shrimp in Naruto's mouth didn't move when she said that and he cocked his head to the side in confusion. "Birthday money? What do ya mean by birthday money? Since when do you get money for your birthday?"

Sendo shrugged and ate the piece of beef. She swallowed and looked over at him. "Well, since I'm not at home for my parents to buy me stuff for my birthday, they send me money. They're worried that I won't live as long because I'm by myself..." She ate a little more ramen and then looked back at him.

His eyes popped open but the piece of shrimp still hung halfway out of his mouth. "WHAT?! Stuff?! Stuff?! What kind of stuff do you get for your birthday??"

Sendo shrugged, not sure how to explain birthday presents. "What do you mean 'what kind of stuff?'?"

An expression of panic crossed his face and he pointed at her, wiggling his finger in her face. "You said! You said your parents send you money instead of 'stuff' because you're not there! Why would they give you stuff?! Why would they send you money?! What gives?!" The peice of shrimp in his mouth was sucked in and he almost choked on it.

Sendo looked up at him. "Birthday presents...to celebrate the fact that you're alive," she said slowly. She didn't know how to explain birthday presents. "Your family, and friends if they're nice, give you gifts to celebrate your existance on the day you were born..."

He froze for a few seconds, I guess the overload of information gave him a malfunction and he had to reboot. "Celebrate? Family? Friends? Nice? For how long has this been going on?! Since when?! Does every body get them?!"

Sendo shrugged and ate a little of her ramen. "I don't know how long it's been going," she admitted. "And I would guess that most people get gifts...but of course not all..." She remember all the homeless people she had seen during her travels. And then there was Naruto, who didn't have parents. She didn't know if he had other friends...not to be mean or anything.

Naruto's mouth hung open for a few seconds. "Wait... You said... Birthday.. Every year... Gifts..." He jumped out of his seat, almost knocking it over. "Sorry, Death Harem, but I gotta get outta here! I have years of gift-getting to be done!" He started running off without a second's glance. "See ya later!"
